Introduction

Introduction:

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Research, Innovation, and Capacity Development Centre (Research, Innovation, and Capacity Development Centre) is a leading institution under the Ministry of Water Supply, Government of Nepal. Its primary objective is to strengthen the water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector across the country. Operating from its headquarters in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur District, the centre functions as a national-level hub for research and capacity development. Its responsibilities range from training technical and social personnel active in the WASH sector to conducting studies and promoting new technologies and methodologies.

The institutional structure includes various branches responsible for research and capacity development, training operations, information technology, hostel management, administration, and finance. In collaboration with federal, provincial, and local authorities, the centre has expanded its services to target WASH service providers and communities from urban centers to rural settlements across all provinces of Nepal. Working in partnership with sectoral organizations, NGOs, and international stakeholders, the centre delivers training and technology transfer down to provincial and local levels, reaching even the most remote communities.

Building on the solid foundation of the former National Training Centre, the Research, Innovation, and Capacity Development Centre has adopted a broader vision. It conducts standardized training courses and workshops for engineers, technicians, managers, and social operators while proactively advancing research and innovation initiatives to address emerging challenges, such as water quality management, climate change impacts, and sustainable sanitation solutions. Its modern classrooms, laboratories, and residential hostels enable long-term training and research activities in a self-contained and well-equipped environment.

Adopting a client-oriented approach, the centre has established itself as a platform for technology-related information, capacity development support, and knowledge sharing for stakeholders in the WASH sector. With a strong focus on quality (ISO-certified processes) and commitment to partnership, the centre plays a vital role in achieving the national goal of providing safe water and improved sanitation services to every Nepali and in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6), while remaining prepared to expand its role in the future.
